Piet DeWeerd originally chronicled his studies of various strains of pigeons under the title Piet DeWeerd about the Janssens of Arendonk. This book which highlights the Janssens and many other old champions of pigeon racing. However, in telling their stories, Piet DeWeerd is also telling his remarkable story.

We can easily say Piet DeWeerd was way ahead of his time. Now many go from champion loft to champion loft looking for the best pigeons. Piet DeWeerd started this in the late thirties. Mr. DeWeerd traveled all over the world not only seeking the finest pigeons but contacting and becoming friends with experts in genetics, orientation and breeding from Cornell University to Professor Anker in Budapest, Hungary, Dr. Bonsma at African Univeristy in South Africa, to the leading racehorse breeders in California to Australia, Mexico, etc. First his traveling companion was Sjef Oomens, his partner and good friend and later his son Henk accompanied him. Whether riding a bicycle in the pouring rain, through a war zone or on a jet plane, Piet DeWeerd was indeed on a mission.

Dubbed a "master selector" by fellow fanciers all over the world, Piet DeWeerd followed many individual birds progress in their racing and breeding careers. He is a true visionary.
